Music

Music is part of the performing arts: the collection of artistic and creative professions which are based upon performance. The aim of music is to connect with an audience on a variety of levels: aesthetically, emotionally and visually. It is based upon the combination of sounds in concord, in order to create a pleasurable auditory experience. This involves the manipulation of various elements such as rhythm, pitch and timbre in order to do so.

Music can be instrumental, for example, a brass band, or vocal - an opera singer. In the case of the former, this can involve a wide variety of instruments, which range from the familiar, such as the classical guitar, though to the unusual, such as the pan pipes. With the latter, vocal examples include male voice choirs through to rap artists. A piece of music can be organised affair in which the performer follows a precise musical notation via a sheet or book. This can be seen in orchestras, brass bands and pianists. At the other end of the spectrum is experimental or freeform music in which the performer or performers improvise. This often means taking a risk in that the performer has no idea of what the outcome will be and so is going for spontaneity and experience.

Music is comprised of a whole range of styles, which includes easy listening, film scores, rock, garage and reggae. Music appreciation is very much a personal preference with there being a type of music to suit everyone’s taste.
